My research group just released a new sensing technology at ACM CHI 2021 which we believe is a game changer for smart city sensing.

This video provides a good overview.

The idea is that you don’t have to deploy special purpose sensors – instead, you just co-opt existing retroreflective signs and markers (street signs, traffic bollards, etc.) already deployed in cities.  Our special sensor and software allows cities to turn these existing signs into wireless, unpowered accelerometers at ranges up to 1km.  A single VibroSight base station can sense hundreds (or even thousands) of signs for traffic monitoring, tree health, wind, rain level, pedestrian flow, trashcan/mailbox utilization and much more.
