Verónica Arroyo: The Mexican unique digital ID (CUID) proposal threatens human rights
2/04/2021 – 08:22
The undersigned organizations (R3D: Red en Defensa de los Derechos Digitales and Access Now) express their concern regarding the draft General Population Law, and in particular regarding the mandatory “Unique Digital Identity Card” (CUID) project, which would be built using a centralized database compiling the biometric data of all Mexican citizens and all foreigners who are in Mexico.
The bill seeks to create a national Digital ID System among other provisions regarding the population. The enrollment will be mandatory, it will use a centralized biometric database, and the ID card will be mandatory to access all public and private services. Only by reading these characteristics you can conclude that this bill puts in jeopardy several human rights of 130 million people.
The bill was approved in the Deputy chamber with little open debate and now it is in the Senators chamber. In that sense, they would like to have your support to tell the senators to reconsider and delete the dangerous provisions of this bill.
